The Gawad Kalinga (GK) story is coming to the big
screen. Simply put GK meaning "to give care" is a
movement that is sweeping across the Philippines and
spilling over to Filipinos and non-Filipinos overseas,
and the Philippine film industry will not be left
behind in being a part of it.

THE GAWAD KALINGA MOVIE
PARAISO: Tatlong Kwento ng Pag-Asa

The Gawad Kalinga (GK) movement is sweeping across the Philippines and
overseas and the Philippine film industry will not be left behind in
being a part of it. Three inspiring stories of ordinary people touched by
Gawad Kalinga are highlighted in the movie “Paraiso: Tatllong Kwento in
Pag-Asa.” (Paradise: Three Stories of Hope).

The title of the movie Paraiso meaning Paradise is simply what GK has
been to the masses as the grassroots movement is radically rebuilding
the country one family at a time.

The GK Trilogy:
Umiyak Man Ang Langit (Even If Heaven Cries) is based on Jocelyn’s life
experiences who lost loved ones in the mudslides of St. Bernard, S.
Leyte. The story captures the pain, the internal struggles and the healing
that takes place in all of us once faced with life-changing events.

Ang Kapatid Kong Si Elvis (My Brother Elvis) is a story, on a lighter
note, centered on a boy who ate pebbles to satisfy his hunger and a GK
volunteer’s family who adopted him as their own. The story captures the
challenges and rewards of being involved with GK.

Marie is a story based on how a tragic loss can be turned into a living
legacy and a new beginning. Marie Rose Abad perished in the twin tower
tragedy of 9/11. Rudy Abad honors his wife with a living legacy.

The movie is the first of its kind whose making in itself captures the
very essence of GK, the bayanihan spirit or being heroes for one
another. Mainstream movie producers (the likes of Butch Jimenez, senior VP of
PLDT , Tony Gloria of Crying Ladies and Tony Tuveria of Eat Bulaga),
actors (the likes of Maricel Soriano, Cesar Montano, Robert Arevalo,
Ricky Davao, Carmi Martin, Michael V. and Lilia Dizon), and entertainment
executives (the likes of Bobby Barreiro), all waived their fees for GK
and contributed their talents to be a part of the GK movement. The
production people and vendors likewise sacrificed and did their own share of
GK padugo (bleed for the cause) in getting this movie made.

Building a Paradise for all by reshaping an image, cultivating the
mindset and reaching out to a higher calling of being a hero is what Gawad
Kalinga is all about.

HOW THE PARAISO GK MOVIE CAME TO LIFE
by Bobby Barreiro, TV executive (executive producer and prime mover of
GK movie project)

In my mind, I am not worthy to share the same stage as the many heroes
that I have seen here before us.
She’s part of
CFC and also GK. She was assigned in GKOM, and she’s not in the
communications industry. She always asks me and calls me kung paano ba gagawin
niya.

Nagpunta dito Rose Cabrera, sabi niya (his sister) she (ate Rose) would
like to meet you and bounce off several ideas with you. Sabi ko sige.
Nag-meeting kami ni Rose ng January 6, 2006 somewhere in Makati. They
had an idea of a multi-city program in many areas that will be beamed via
satellite that will be an exchange of variety shows. Sabi ko sa kanya
na nagawa na at wala masyadong saysay kundi partying. Sabi niya, anong
naiisip mong idea? Sabi ko siguro magandang gumawa ng Pelikula.

At the time, uso pa yung mga “indies”, independent films. Sabi namin
pelikula for 1 million pesos lahat na yun, ipre-premiere worldwide.
Ang ginagawa naming talaga television shows. I
worked with GMA, now with ABC 5.

Iba yung disiplina niya (film making). Itong pelikula, pinaghahandaan,
matagal-tagal niyong gagawin. Sige, explain naming kay Tito Tony (yung
idea). Nag-set kami ng meeting with Tito Tony, (sabi namin) Tito Tony
meron kaming idea, nagustuhan naman nila. Tapos sabi naming, ayan na ho
yung idea, sino kayang gagawa niyan?

idea, you better be ready to implement it yourself! Di sabi ko, tama nga
naman.

If there is any one thing that God has given me it is that I have many
good friends that I can tap.

Kinausap ko si Tony Tuviera, producer ng Eat Bulaga, 27 years in the
running.
Naiintriga ako dun sa mamang (man)

(I also asked) Butch Jimenez, Senior Vice President ng PLDT, Agora
awardee, Ten outstanding young men, Ten outstanding persons of the world
awardee.
iba.

(I also approached) Si Tony Gloria, owner of Unitel and Optima,
producer of Crying Ladies, and one of the best producers in the country. Sabi

Palanca Award Hall of Famer si Jun Lana (writer of Jose Rizal and
Muro-ami).

Si Maricel (Soriano) po, I’ve never seen any person so nice and so easy
to work with.

What we planned to do was a small independent movie shot at high
definition format sana but what we ended up with is a movie bigger than we
ever thought we’d make, with the biggest stars shot on film.

And it’s not because we wanted to but it’s because there was a hand
guiding us, telling us that this is the way to go. Don’t sell GK short.

In behalf of all the people who took part in the movie, we would like
to thank you for allowing us to tell the world about the GK story.
Maraming salamat po!
