ACCIONA CAPTURES 2007 HK-NBA TOURNEY CROWN IN CLASSIC, DEFEATS RFC, 70-66

Acciona, which had come up short in last year’s finals against Telekom, made its second crown in three championship appearances when Acciona (formerly Necso team) defeated the highly favourite RFC, 70-66, to capture Hong Kong’s NBA 2007 (Noypi Basketball Association) basketball tournament championship at the Tsing Yi Sports Centre.

RFC, which was making its first appearance in the HK-NBA tournament championship game in two years, improved its rank this year after got eliminated last year in the final four was a firm favourite to win the championship after beating Acciona twice in the two-round elimination.

But thanks to the big play of Fernan Hung, Ricky Pasion and Jinno Reyes – all Tournament awardees, and Brix Chico who stepped up his game in both offense and defense to contain MVP candidate Francis Itaas – the Acciona team captured the most coveted tournament crown of the year.

Both teams came out and traded spectacular plays in the entire game. After several quarters of excellent two-way action, Acciona hang on to keep its narrow lead and relied to its big three – Hung, Pasion and Reyes in the dying seconds of the game.
 
Three players from both teams scored doubled figures. Hung led Acciona with 21 pts, followed by Jinno Reyes and Brix Chico with 14 and 10 points, respectively. Big support came from Ricky Pasion and Ryan Varquez, last year’s MVP, with 8 points apiece and 3 points from Acciona’s big guard Dante Antipuesto. Team head coach is Lito Puche. Acciona played without its star center Jay Yap.

Francis Itaas, Marlon De Ocampo and Marlon Clavio spearheaded RFC team with scores 23, 13 and 10, respectively, while Eric Goyena and Willie Fuentes scored 8 points apiece and 3 points from Bel Lorenzo. The team coach is Allan Henson.

Acciona (9-3) earned a spot in the championship with a 86-82 upset win over Pit Bull (9-3) in a rubber match three weeks earlier, while RFC topped the elimination with 10-2 (W-L card).

The neck and neck battle for MVP honour was decided whoever team wins the championship. Acciona’s Fernan Hung, who averaged 15.43ppg, took the MVP plum due to outcome of the final game, narrowly beating RFC’s Francis Itaas, who averaged 20.50ppg.

Fernan Hung and Ricky Passion, who averaged 15.8ppg, were joined on the All-Tournament Mythical Five team by Pit Bull’s guard Chris Keung*, 19ppg, center Willy Fuentes, 13ppg, and forward Francis Itaas, both of RFC. The Scoring Champion was Mac Narciso of First Technology, who averaged 28.2ppg. Jinno Reyes was adjudged as the 6th Man Player of the Year. Most Improved Player went to Hammad of Pit Bull, while the Rookie of the Year was JR Peralta of Macrotech. Andy Chan Chiu was the winner of the 3-Point Shootout this year.
