Arnel Pineda, Journey’s new lead singer!

November 16, 2007

journey-2008-a1.jpg
Arnel Pineda, a former Pinoy singer in Hong Kong, and vocalist of Manila based The ZOO, was chosen by a San Francisco based rock band Journey, who popularized the hits of the 80’s like “Faithfully” “Don’t Stop Believing’ and “Open Arms and “Any Way You Want It”.

He’s been rocking Hong Kong music scene for a decade, and had regular shows in Cavern, before he went back for good
to Manila last year to form a new band called “The ZOO”. They had one CD record on their name.

His awesome Journey cover songs which were posted in Youtube.com seven months ago, caught everyone’s attention, most especially the band itself. Arnel had this great, powerful vocals and excellent tone, and have the closest voice to Steve Perry. Later, Journey invited Arnel Pineda to audition as their next vocalist. Deal was done and we’ll just have to wait for formal announcement sooner.
Here’s one of his best Journey cover song live performance.

Unfortunately, hardcore Journey fans are allegedly ridiculing Arnel for the way he introduces the songs in a Filipino accent.

OK. Let’s hear the original Steve Perry performing Journey’s hit song “Don’t Stop
Believing”

and here’s our very own Arnel Pineda and The Zoo band doing a cover song of their hit song “Don’t Stop Believing”. Isn’t it unbelievable?

I have nothing against him being Filipino… What I don’t like is that you can here his accent in all the Journey songs he sings. Journey is an American Rock Band and I don’t think it will go over well when people here the accent. If he had not accent it would be a whole different story. I can’t believe that Neil Schon would hire him with the accent issue. All the vocal training in the world can’t get rid of the accent completely.

ajmanz, what you heard on youtube are cover songs of Journey he made before he was discovered by Neil and band.
He was invited to perform in front of them and chose him to be their next vocalist. You may have that accent issue, but they don’t.
He should be having some language training as well right now in SF.

Arnel has a great voice and deserve this chance.
    Let’s just wait and see.

beautiful Journey music to their fans and the

not be an issue, if there is.

i wud agree with DHK, accent can be refined and acquired…it’s not that hard..especially for us filipinos ;P

I concur with what you said DHK! Accent can be improved and enhanced definitely in a brief time and NOT AT ALL AN ISSUE! My gosh! Rite AJMANZ? Arnel, our very good friend has an EXCEPTIONAL Talent. His voice is indeed amazin’ and tremendously admirable! “IBANG KLASE”! He’d been into this for ages, man! YES, his singing’ prowess is stunnin’! Such special talent that is could not be acquired overnight. Let’s just wish him the best. Evryone deserves a big break such as this as long as one has it. Rite? He is the one CHOSEN! So what’s the issue? What’s the fuss! The guys who have picked him had certainly made the right choice and decision. ok. Kudos to you Arnel! WE LOVE YOU! WE’RE SO PROUD OF YOU, HOMIE!!! When Neal S., Jonathan C., Ross V. & Steve S. invited AP for audition, for sure they’ve studied, debated & discussed everything about their criterion, preference and the like. They would not waste time, money & effort getting AP if they didn’t see any ‘goldmine’ in their ‘prize catch.’.

Who cares about an accent when he speaks??? We all have different accents and we also have people in the USA from all over the world. I have a southern accent and in California, the women love it! Don’t be shallow about someones accent my friends
I buy a cd or go to a consert to hear singing and music, not talking.

Another note: If Steve Perry doesn’t want to listen to his fans and get back with Journey then more power to Arnel if he gets the gig.

I’ve been a Journey fan since the Escape (E5C4P3) Album, yeah that’s right album, not CD, that just gives you an idea how much of an old school or ol’ fart I am.

I was fortunate enough too to witness the “Frontiers” concert. They rocked, Steve Perry’s voice was insane, Neal just rippin’ his ax like a mad child, and the one I watched and listened the most was Steve Smith on drums. The guy got mad beats. He was one of the better drummers back in the day next to Neil Peart from Rush. Another good drummer is the one guy from the Police. Sorry Alex, although Van Halen is may favorite band of the 80’s, your drumming was just okay. Alex used a beat box a lot. During his drum solo’s, when the lights would flicker you knew that box would kick in. For everytime he hit the drum, an electronic beat would follow. A cheater in a way. But he fooled the crowed (even up to now he does the same thing).

Back to the subject…Journey will always be my top 3 bands from the 80’s (Van Halen #1 & Foreigner #3), we are all getting older, if getting Arnel is what it takes to make Journey a premire band again. Do it! Neil S. & Jonathan C. are great musicians, there is a reason they picked Arnel. Let’s all just wait and see and hope they made the best choices to put themselves back on #1 Billboard.

All of a sudden, I have the urge to look for that baseball concert jersey of the Alien (Frontier Tour). HA HA HA

You just have problem not of his accent but because he is not white and he does not live in a trailer park.

Who cares about the accent? No matter how good or bad the accent is, always remember that “MUSIC IS OUR UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE”. No matter where you’re coming from, we’re all supposed to be UNITED when it comes to music. I agree with DOTTY, Scorpions has a real heavy accent. But why do people like them? Because they produce good music, and so as Journey. C’mon people, give this guy a chance. Deep inside, we all know that he can do the job with his amazing voice. A lot of us are just not being true to ourselves.

Journey’s a great band otherwise they wouldn’t be in the Rock n Roll hall of fame so in a way, Arnel is riding on their coat tails. Having said that however, they too are getting something out of making him their front man. Youth! Energy! Vitality!

Plus he has his own fan base and, Filipinos, not matter if they have heard Journey before or not, will surely become their fans too!

Now what other ’80s band can garner the adulation of new, younger fans?

To all of you who claims that you’re hardcore Journey fans, “YOU’RE NOT”. You may have seen all the Journey concerts, bought all their records & CD’s, decorated your entire house with Journey posters and memorabillas. The true Journey fanatic is the one who even during this period of POP and RAP music domination, preaches their music even long after Steve Perry has left. He’d be the one singing his best rendition of Journey music night after night even to a half empty bar. We should be thankful for guys like ARNEL PINEDA and his band. This guy could easily make a name for himself, but instead they chose to keep the good music alive rather than go mainstream and do RAP music (half the time I dont even know what rap is all about, it mostly swearing and sexual inuendos). Let’s give this guy AP “the biggest Journey fan” a chance, most of all let’s not forget about the other original band members, we cannot just allow these guys to fade into oblivion just because they lost their last lead singer. Congratulations gentlemen, I hope this new guy is the one you’ve been waiting for.

Accent does not diminish a great vocal range! Journey needs someone who can bring life back into their band. They’ve thought, analyzed, examined, Arnel’s talent and they picked him.

Remember–the audience on the YouTube videos are Filipinos. Even if he did not have a “Filipino” accent in introducing the songs, Filipino audiences will feel offended if a Filipino singer adopts an American English accent.

Celine Dion did not speak a word of English when she broke into the American scene. Look at where she is now!

Let’s face it, this guy can sing Journey songs just as good as Steve Perry.

The most lowly people I’ve seen in this world are those who act as self appointed guardian of the English language. You have nothing against Filipinos yet your comment is a very racist one!

Just for your learning lesson, Here is an adverb, while Hear is a verb.

“I don’t think it will go over well when people here the accent. If he had not accent it would be a whole different story”

The essence of communication is to get across the intended meaning to the intended audience. I got your meaning but for the sake of grammar, you’ve not only misspelled “hear” but it is my conviction that you had been using it all your life.

Arnel is a great singer, and sings the Journey songs perfectly. Just like a lot of Filipinos, we’re thankful Neil doesn’t think like you do.

Accent, oh no! Anong accent na pinagsasabi nitong mga unggoy na’to! Uyo’y, inggit lang ka’yo! When Arnel’s singing a song, it’s incredible, say nga ni Ellen DeGeneres, tapos say n’yo accent, mga unggoy! If you talk to Arnel personally dito sa America, yes indeed meron nga, ‘coz hindi naman siya lumaki dito sa States, but when he is singing a song, wala ng accent na pinagsasabi ninyo, mga b’wisit na, ginagalit n’yo ‘ata ako ah, sige iiyak ako!!! If Arnel got an accent, how about Rod Stewat, si bakla Elton John, and Mc Donald na wala pa ngang letra when he sing, listen to them, the accent mga TANGA na BOBO pa!!! NO hirit, okey!

Accent issue, give AP a break!!! What about The Beatles brit accent issue…for sure it wasn’t a problem, right?

Arnel has a perfect pitch and a soaring solid full-bodied vocals unless your ears are growing potatoes or the lack thereof of some music sense.

Leave him alone…let him do his job!

Three days ago a lot of my co-workers had asked me if I am going to Arnel’s concert here in Dallas, and I said, who???…. then they all told me about him. So first thing I did when I got home, went to YT. Dang…. I was speechless, watched all about him including the CBS news, he’s one hell of a Pinoy! I’m not a rocker, nor watch Filipino events for a long long time but after knowing about Arnel, I feel I have to see ALL about him. Of course, not only I’m proud of him. He seems very humble with a GREAT voice! I just hope he’s not going to be like some other flip celebrities in PI whose heads are getting bigger because of their fame. Anyway, I went to Walmart yesterday and got his album, then got 2 tickets for his concert on July 27th. And mind you, I’ll be in the second row (1st row is sold out) !!! ( Hugging my hubby here!! ) LOL!

SUPER…. I bought his CD at gasgas na sa kauulit kong pakikinig kahit dito sa office. More power to you Arnel. I’ll see you in September here in Concord , CA.

Honestly, I have heard of some journey’s songs at some parties but then I didn’t have any clue who sung those songs until my sister Carole came to Califonia for a vacation. She asked if we knew this filipino singer by the name of Arnel pineda who now is the new lead vocalist for journey band,I said “no” She said to go to “Youtube” We saw his video clips and concert performances on both here and abroad. (las vegas and chile)I was moved and amazed of his incredible voice and talent. I bought his new CD package immediately as soon as they became available. Man i am so proud of him after listening to his songs with the journey band. He exactly sound like Steve Perry. Since then i started spreading or telling to friends and families about him. Even at work did i tell them about him. I became addicted of his songs that i would play his CD every time i get a chance in my car or at home. God Bless and more power AP!
