ACCIONA Hammers PitBull, 86-82, Gains Finals Slot!
September 6, 2007
For the third time, Acciona intensified its mastery over Pit Bull, 86-82, in the deciding match to face the idling RFC in the Finals. The result is easier to expect since Acciona led the series, 2-0, between these two teams before the rubbermatch. However, the real stories turned out different.
Acciona who fielded-in its first five that give usual headaches to Pit Bull starters, were no answer to rampaging Pit Bulls. Pit Bull led all the way, 10-9 1st quarter, 33-26 2nd quarter and extended their lead to 14 points after the third quarter 58-44. However, crucial turnovers in inbound plays in the backcourt rattled Pit Bull and cost them the game in the fourth quarter. It became Acciona’s key to comeback in the game and pulled off a big win.

Fernan Hung and Chris Keung seemed to be going shot-for-shot
at times Wednesday night. In the end, Fernan Hung made the
bucket that mattered most.

Chris Keung attempts 3-pt shot while Hung tries to stop him.
Fernan Hung scored 35 points while Chris Keung has 30 points,
but Fernan Hung sank a 3-pointer that put Acciona ahead for the
first time 80-79 with 1:29 to go in final regulation to lead Acciona
to a 86-82 victory last night and a face off with RFC in the Finals.
Hung was voted as the MVP of this game.

Fernan Hung vs Chris Keung
Ricky Pasion added 14 points, Jinno Reyes who made a lot of steals
in the backcourt contributed 12 points, Jon Jon Angeles and Dante
Antipuesto scored 8 points a piece. Ryan Varquez with 3 points,
Brix Chico, Edwin Galicia and Jay Yap all scored 2 points.
Fernan Hung showed why he is also one of the leading candidates
for the MVP award on this NBA – Noypi Basketball Tournament
2007. The 3-point shootout champion last year sank three
consecutive 3-pointers the moment he entered the game in the
second quarter. Then he drilled another six 3-pts in the fourth
quarter, including 10 consecutive points in one stretch in the dying
minutes of the fourth, to surpass his league high score record.
A poor defense on the part of Pit Bull team where they shadowed
the cat-quick Hung the entire game but failed to stop Fernan
launched his 3’s. They gave him a lot of space to set his feet before
releasing his favourite weapon. They did not deny the ball and
square their body off Hung.
During a crucial four-minute stretch of the fourth period, the Pit Bull
team went 1-for-6 with a lot of turnovers, allowing Acciona to make
a comeback. Chris Keung missed 2 crucial lay-ups that could have
brought back the lead to Pit Bull and a possible victory for his team.
Pit Bull also failed to take advantage with the size of Nezar inside but
it’s the brickwalled Dante Antipuesto who managed to check on
Nezar while Jay Yap is manning the center position and grabbed
those towering rebounds. Nezar missed a lot of close lay-ups and
hesitated on his shots.

After Pit Bull relinquished their lead, Bobby Reyes was fouled and
split the charity shot that tied the ball game for the 2nd time 80-80
with a minute to go – the first deadlock was 70-70 with under 4
minutes left in the fourth. Acciona didn’t capitalize their next
possession and then a Pit Bull turnover on the inbound pass that
was intercepted by Jinno Reyes who laid it up for 2 points plus a
foul, 83-80 Acciona led by 3 points.

Jinno Reyes elevates between Hammad and LordEver and gets the bucket.
On the next ball possession for Pit Bull, Hammad was freed
underneath and converted a follow up for 2 points, 83-82. Then
Acciona fumbled the ball and Chris had a get-away lay up but he
surprisingly missed the important shot. With 34 seconds to go in
final regulation, Pit Bull had stolen the ball and a fast break to Chris
for a lay up but it’s another big miss. Obviously, fatigue has taken
its toll at this crucial, dying seconds of the game against Pit Bull.

With time running out Dante Antipuesto was left out in the
backcourt for a layup and a foul 86-82. With 4 seconds remaining,
Pit Bull called their last time out. Pit Bull fumbled the inbound pass
and Acciona recovered the ball and held it into safety until time
expired.

As usual, game ends with both teams shaking hands.
